My family always spent New Year's Day with elderly shifters. Though they didn't recognize us and could no longer shift, we still brought along blankets, hot tea and minced pies. It was the singing that led the odd Shifter to take human form, and they were always happy to see a friendly face when it happened.

I came home to a panicked message from Kayla, and my cheerful mood evaporated. She had been vague on the details, saying only that I should ring her back immediately.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and rang her.

“Hey, Kayla. What’s going on?”

“The Oath failed. I told my family everything - aunts, cousins, the whole lot, and they heard every word,” she told me. She spoke rapidly, explaining to me what had happened.

She was in quite a state. I tried calming her down, but it was infectious. I'd never heard of the Oath failing like this. Something must have gone wrong, but what? Dad got the Oath from the elves himself just before Kayla got to the house yesterday.

“I'll talk to my family. I’m sure we can figure it out,” I said, hoping I was right. “Don't worry. There's got to be a simple way to fix this.”

I hung up and faced my parents and sister. They all watched me with concern in their eyes.

“What's wrong?” Mum asked.

“It's Kayla. The Oath didn't take. She told her entire family everything about the North Pole, and now they know,” I said. I chewed my lip as worry ate at my stomach. “Are we in trouble?”

Dad stood. “Of course not, Connor. Call Kayla back and tell her to bring her family here. We’ll take them to Santa. He’ll know what to do.”

I nodded. “Okay, that's a good plan,” I said as I texted Kayla to get over here ASAP. Her reply was instant.
